Kilmarnock-based football club Bonnyton Thistle start disability scheme for kids

Bonnyton Thistle FC from Kilmarnock is piloting an initiative which aims to improve the health and social well-being of primary school aged children with additional support needs (ASN) in the local area.

In partnership with the Grange Academy Park School, the football club is running football-related activity sessions once a week as part of the Bonnyton Thistle Flyers scheme, recognised by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) as Disability Inclusive.

The group includes children with learning difficulties and mental and physical disabilities and the club and school are hoping an official ASN team can be formed in the future.

The club already runs a similar group for adults and teenagers with disabilities and it has been a resounding success, picking up a nomination at the Ayrshire Sportsability Awards in the Activity in the Community Category.

The scheme is run by Bonnyton Thistle coaches John Keast, a former social worker and Arthur Higgins, a former guidance teacher, in partnership with teachers and carers, with the help of Dumbarton FC footballer and Ayrshire College student Grant Gallagher.
